Staff outlines commissioner reappointment and vacancy timeline; interviews expected in coming weeks

Austin Public Health staff briefed the Austin Travis County Public Health Commission on the commissioner reappointment and vacancy process, including how applicants are screened, how the joint city-county appointment process works and an expected timeline for filling a vacancy.
Juanita Jones explained that applications are accepted continuously through the city and county portals. Applications are screened for residency and other qualifications and evaluated using a matrix that includes census-tract social-vulnerability indicators, relevant professional experience (for example, allied health or social-work credentials), and demographic balance across race, ethnicity and gender so city and county joint appointments reflect community diversity.
Jones said that the current long-running vacancy produced 11 applicants this cycle and that staff plan to interview five candidates by the end of the month. After interviews, the recommended candidate will go to the City Council and the county's approval process; depending on scheduling, a new commissioner would likely start in August. Jones also reviewed staggered term expirations: expiring in 2026 are Commissioners Crookham, Witty and Chair Poindexter; expiring in 2027 are Commissioners Dahlhausen, Vice Chair Enrique, Commissioner Rice, Commissioner Wallace and Commissioner Lujan.
Next steps: staff will complete interviews, forward a recommended candidate to the city and county for approval, and the new commissioner will complete required training before beginning service.
