The Stewartville Public School District school board approved a revised compensation structure for board members, establishing an annual stipend of $1,600 for the chair, $1,000 for officers and directors, $45 for attendance at each regular board meeting and $30 for attendance at committee, special and work session meetings.
Board members debated the change, emphasizing that the total annual compensation is unchanged and that the revision reallocates how the stipend is paid to emphasize attendance at regular meetings. Several members expressed concern about public perception that short meetings could result in the same pay as lengthy meetings; supporters said the new structure better ties pay to presence and the extra duties of officers and committee work.
Members also asked how virtual participation would affect stipend eligibility. The board discussed current state requirements for remote attendance, noting that state statute requires posting the remote location three days in advance under existing law and that members must be in a public location that can be identified on the agenda. Board members said they are monitoring potential state changes that could expand virtual participation rules.
A motion to adopt the compensation structure passed unanimously (7-0). The board noted the change is year-to-year and can be revisited at future organizational meetings.
