Tiffany Bessie, the district’s technology integrationist, briefed the Yankton School District 63-3 board about Computer Science Education Week activities and ongoing technology support she provides in elementary classrooms.
Bessie said she worked with fourth- and fifth-graders on block-based coding activities during December’s nationwide Computer Science Education Week. She described using code.org and other block-based tools that show students both block code and the equivalent written code; she said students respond to the problem-solving demands of coding and enjoy the immediate visual feedback.
Bessie also summarized routine duties that occupy much of her time: classroom coaching, troubleshooting teacher requests, creating choice boards for students during holiday breaks, and supporting teachers with streaming resources and educational databases. She told the board that increased teacher uptake led other grade levels to request coding activities after hearing about the elementary lessons.
Board members thanked Bessie and several said their children enjoyed the coding lessons; no formal action was requested.
