Council agrees to agendize resolution affirming Moreno Valley as a welcoming city for immigrants

Council members agreed to add an item to a future meeting to consider a resolution affirming the City of Moreno Valleys commitment to be a welcoming community for law-abiding immigrants.
Council member Gonzales said Moreno Valley thrives on diversity and asked the council to bring the item forward so staff could provide options and resources. Gonzales proposed the city adopt a resolution stating the citys commitment to all residents "regardless of their immigration status" and asked for a second.
City Manager Bridal Mohan told council members that California is a sanctuary state and that several other local entities, including the county and school district, have previously adopted statements or resources. The city manager said to his recollection the city itself has not enacted a standalone resolution on the subject.
A council member seconded Gonzaless request to agendize the resolution, and the city manager said staff would add the item to the next agenda for deliberation. No vote on a final resolution occurred at the Feb. 4 meeting.
Council members across the dais spoke about treating residents with dignity and raised concerns about federal immigration enforcement; several council members said they would seek a formal reaffirmation of policies or resources to support immigrant residents.
The council did not adopt a resolution at the Feb. 4 meeting; staff will return with an agenda item for future deliberation.
