Public commenters urge nonpartisan board conduct and local teacher recruitment; trustee requests review of discipline/false-report policy

Barbara Foote, identified as a former board president, thanked outgoing trustees and urged the new board to be nonpartisan and place students' education first. Foote said, "Please remember that you are a group of nonpartisan members whose goal is to provide the best education for the youth of District 1. There are no political agendas here running this district as board members." She also reminded trustees they have authority only as a group and encouraged visiting schools.
Karen Griffin, a retired 12-year board member, likewise urged trustees to keep personal agendas out of board business and to remember that the role requires respectful conduct: "The children of this district deserve a board of caring, informed, respectful, and nonpartisan members. Please keep our personal agenda at the door and above all, remember the education of our students attending our school district deserve that."
Bruce Luna urged the district to recruit teachers locally, including outreach to NAU and AWC students, and to develop pathways to retain future vice principals and principals from within the district. He said recruiting students who are already local would increase the chance they remain in Yuma.
Separately, a trustee asked to add an informational item to a future agenda to review the district's behavioral and discipline policies with particular attention to false reporting. The trustee said false accusations have led to resignations and asked administration to present current policy and possible policy changes; the superintendent's office indicated it can present a high-level review and that the board can then decide whether a deeper study or committee is needed.
Ending Trustees thanked the speakers and placed a discipline policy review on a future agenda as an informational item; no policy changes were adopted at this meeting.
