The U.N. spokesperson said the secretary-general “welcomes the signing of the agreement between the government of the United Kingdom and the government of the Republic of Mauritius concerning the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia,” and called the agreement “a significant step towards resolving a long‑standing dispute.” The spokesperson said the U.N. urged both parties to continue constructive discussions and to ensure the rights and aspirations of Chagossian people are respected; the U.N. offered to support both countries in the process.
Separately, the secretary‑general appointed Yasmine Fuad of Egypt as executive secretary of the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The briefing said Fuad will succeed Ibrahim Cho of Mauritania and noted she has served as Egypt’s minister of environment since 2018 and has more than 25 years of experience in environmental governance and diplomacy. The briefing said the appointment followed consultations with the UNCCD and that the secretary‑general thanked Ibrahim Cho for his service.
