Live Oak approves interlocal agreement with Universal City to modernize radio communications, council cites 50% cost savings

The Live Oak City Council on Feb. 25 approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute an interlocal agreement with Universal City to upgrade radio communications infrastructure and share costs for the project; the vote was 5-0.
Chief Reitus said the project will replace outdated T1 lines with dark fiber and add a new router to securely transfer data between both cities and the LCRA core system. “This is a mutually beneficial agreement that significantly lowers costs for both cities while improving our communications infrastructure,” Chief Reitus said, and staff estimated the approach cuts the project’s cost by more than 50 percent.
The agreement also increases redundancy for public-safety communications, Chief Reitus said: if one line is cut, traffic can be routed through the partner city’s fiber; the planned topology provides multiple fallback paths including microwave and multiple fiber routes. “We’ve gone from having no redundancy to having 3 different levels,” he said.
Council members praised the regional approach and noted the project was budgeted. The resolution authorizes the city manager to execute the interlocal agreement and any actions reasonably necessary to implement it; the council approved the resolution 5-0.
