The City of Live Oak Economic Development Corporation on Jan. 28 approved a $10,000 marketing sponsorship for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas to support the organization's 2025 Bowl for Kids' Sake event and its local mentoring program.
Staff told directors this is the third consecutive year the organization requested marketing funds for the event. The sponsorship is for marketing and promotional purposes (not hotel occupancy tax funds), and the event date was stated as July 19, 2025, with activities likely in Leon Valley at a bowling venue.
Hugh (presenter identified as Mr. Farr/Biggs representative) described program results in Live Oak, saying that matches supported in the community grew from two active matches at the last report to seven active matches, noting, "Since last we met, there were 2 active matches in your community that we were supporting. Today we have a total of 7." He told directors the program is free to participants and that the requested $10,000 would support programming, volunteer recruitment and safety components including background checks and training.
Mr. Farr summarized uses of the funds: training for staff, families and volunteers; background checks and safety assurances; and support to recruit and maintain matches. He also said other grant or funding sources had not yet been confirmed.
During discussion directors expressed support for the program’s local impact. Director Simmons said he was satisfied with past results and was prepared to support the $10,000 sponsorship. Director Streets thanked the organization for its work. A motion to approve the sponsorship was made and seconded; the board approved the marketing-funds request 5-0.
The staff presentation included proposed sponsor-levels for the Bowl for Kids' Sake event (Lucky Strike $10,000; Perfect Score $5,000; Ally Sponsor $2,000; Lane Sponsor $500). The organization said the funding helps eliminate a local waiting list by moving children "ready to be matched" into active matches.
The resolution approved marketing funds for promotional purposes; the meeting record does not show additional contractual conditions, reporting timelines, or which city line-item will be charged. The presenters noted that other expected funding sources had not yet been confirmed at the time of the request.
