Summary
The board approved a contract renewal with K12 by Elior for school meal services. Students and trustees asked for better quality and for administration to report meal counts and menu constraints tied to federal nutrition rules and the district’s high free-and-reduced rate.
The board voted May 29 to renew the district meal-service contract with K12 by Elior (item 5.06). The agreement continues a multi-year relationship; administrators said the renewal is routine but noted the board receives annual approval under the five‑year contract schedule.
Student representative Edgar Tirado and other community members urged improvement to food quality and clearer communication about menus. Tirado said many students do not like the meals and noted the nutritional needs of student-athletes who spend much of their day at school. “...they're not eating the food or that they don't like the food and they eat it because they have to because they don't get home until later on,” Tirado said.
Administrators and the vendor explained that school meals must comply with federal and state nutrition standards, including sodium and sugar limits that were recently tightened. The administration said the district’s high free-and-reduced lunch rate constrains menu flexibility and funding: federally reimbursed meals must meet certain nutritional thresholds and changes to offerings would require an identified funding source. Executive Director Simmons said she would bring meal counts and menus to the next board meeting and that K12 by Elior staff will meet with student groups during summer school to gather feedback.
Trustees and participants asked for continued dialogue with students, sample menus and a plan for addressing complaints. The board approved the renewal but asked administration to provide a written summary of meal participation counts and to convene a small student tasting/review group over summer school.
