The Cranston City Plan Commission on Wednesday elected Commissioner Steven Frias as chairman and selected Commissioner Rob Coop as vice president, then voted to continue a planned executive session to Feb. 4 after the city’s attorney was unavailable to attend.
Commissioner Landfear placed Frias’ name in nomination, saying Frias “has served on the Commission for, over 3 years” and “has a capacity to speak plainly and concisely and move matters to a conclusion.” After the nominating remarks and a voice vote, Frias addressed the commission and thanked colleagues.
Frias then nominated Commissioner Rob Coop for vice president and the commission approved Coop’s nomination by voice vote.
The commission also discussed a planned executive session. The city attorney assigned to the matter, Ryan Stice, was not available, and staff reported he would be back in February. Commissioner Lamphere moved to continue the executive-session agenda item to Feb. 4; Commissioner Barberio seconded the motion and the commission approved the continuance by voice vote.
In announcing the leadership changes Frias told colleagues he intends to move the agenda efficiently: “I don’t want to be here past 11:00,” he said, outlining a target pace for the evening’s business.
The executive-session continuation was procedural; staff said counsel will coordinate dates so the closed-session matter can be handled when attorneys and commissioners are available.
