Wenatchee School District reviews ‘ready for algebra’ strategy, highlights language supports for multilingual students

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Leaders and educators in the Wenatchee School District held a workshop to review the district'wide strategy for getting students "ready for algebra," presenting common formative-assessment results, instructional routines and team processes used across elementary and middle schools.
The session framed readiness for algebra as a district priority and reviewed recent implementation steps: training teachers on the "3-Reads" language routine for story problems, establishing math representative teams and reinforcing professional learning community (PLC) protocols so teachers can analyze and respond to student data more quickly.
The workshop opened with district presenters listing two outcomes for the meeting: "to understand how each part of our system plays a role in preparing our students to be algebra ready," and "to explore and reflect on student learning of priority math standards through common formative assessment results." The presenters also reviewed how the district measures the goal: percent of K–8 students scoring at mid/on grade level or above on the spring I-Ready assessment and percent of students in grades 3–8 scoring proficient or above on Smarter Balanced.
Why it matters: District staff said guaranteed and viable instruction delivered consistently from year to year should produce rising proficiency regardless of which students enroll.
