Resident urges borough to inventory federal funding and plan for reductions

At the Feb. 18 Petersburg Borough Assembly meeting, community member Joni Johnson urged the assembly to convene a working meeting to document how much federal financial assistance flows to local organizations and the municipality and to plan for the potential absence of federal funding.
Johnson told the assembly she had reviewed federal spending data online and was struck by the scale of federal funding supporting Alaska and local recipients. “I went to the usaspending.gov website...you can see who's receiving grants, who's receiving contracts,” she said, and suggested the borough could benefit from a systematic, “eyes wide open” inventory and contingency plan.
Johnson described the approach she learned of in a Colorado county, where local officials and stakeholders compiled federal funding totals, identified areas the county could influence, and mapped fiscal gaps. She asked the assembly to consider a similar working meeting to help local government and organizations plan for possible federal funding reductions.
Manager Giesbrecht noted a separate, upcoming Senator Lisa Murkowski telemeeting on federal funding impacts and said staff would circulate call-in information. Assembly members thanked Johnson and said they would consider taking action, including drafting a letter to state and federal representatives about workforce and funding impacts.
Why it matters Johnson framed the proposal as fiscal preparedness: the borough and local organizations receive significant federal funding for services and infrastructure, and an inventory could reveal where local planning or diversification would be prudent.
