Scott Johnson, a community advocate, told the Mobility Committee during public communications on Feb. 20 that distracted driving remains a leading cause of crashes and urged renewed education and enforcement.
Johnson described prior enforcement results in Austin — he said 10,400 distracted‑driving citations were written in one year in 2017 and recent annual citations have fallen below 250 — and argued the city should use outreach channels such as council newsletters and Vision Zero materials to promote awareness. He also shared a short public‑service video, telling committee members the spot (titled "Don't Be a Scott") could be used in city messaging.
Why it matters: Committee members and staff said awareness and coordinated messaging around Distracted Driving Awareness Month (April) could complement enforcement and safety campaigns.
