Richard Mendoza, director of the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works (TPW) department, summarized ongoing department work and project highlights for the Mobility Committee on Feb. 20.
Mendoza said TPW is rolling out the Austin Core Transportation Plan — a small‑area mobility plan for downtown — and expects to bring it to council for adoption into the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan later in the spring. He highlighted continued collaboration with regional partners such as TxDOT, Capital Metro and CAMPO on grant applications and project delivery.
Project highlights and department notes shared with the committee: - Bergstrom Spur urban trail: Mendoza noted a recent groundbreaking and thanked congressional support; staff said federal partners and Congressman Lloyd Doggett joined the event. - Wishbone Bridge (Longhorn Dam): TPW said this congressional earmark is under construction and not affected by the recent executive order review affecting discretionary grants. - Vision Zero: TPW listed intersection safety work and corridor lane‑reduction projects that are advancing, including Stassney and McKinney Falls Parkway lane reductions and Slaughter Lane corridor progress. - Airports and operations: Mendoza said Austin‑Bergstrom International Airport recorded its second‑busiest year in 2024 and that airport concessions had a strong rebound. Mendoza noted, with a light tone, that airport concessions served "over 1,100,000 tacos" in 2024.
Mendoza also reported internal recognition: an equipment operator from Street and Bridge Operations placed third at the Texas APWA conference equipment rodeo and will advance to the national contest.
