Historic Preservation Commission recommends five legacy businesses for registry, forwarding them to Small Business Commission

The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously (7–0) on Feb. 19 to recommend five legacy business applications be forwarded to the Office of Small Business and the Small Business Commission for final consideration.
Planning Department staff introduced each application: the Gargangelo Museum (225 San Leandro Way), Phaedrus BMW (1641 Jackson Street), Rims & Goggles (3568 Sacramento Street), Hamano Sushi (1332 Castro Street) and 1 Union Recording Studios (1 Union Street, Suite 240). Staff described each business’s history, continuous operation, and community role; several properties were noted for architectural interest, including the Phaedrus BMW garage’s 1914 art nouveau façade and Rims & Goggles’ nearly 50‑year retail presence.
Woody Labounty of San Francisco Heritage urged the commission to consider landmarking Phaedrus BMW’s building and praised staff’s description of the Gargangelo Museum. Gargangelo (Greg Angelo) addressed the commission to thank staff and the commission for the consideration. Public comment included support from neighborhood representatives and business owners.
Commissioners praised the businesses as neighborhood anchors. Commissioner Vergara moved to recommend all five applications; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll call that recorded aye votes from Commissioners Barone, Bridal, Vergara, Wright, Foley, Niguez Warren and President Matsuda.
Staff will forward the commission's recommendations and supporting documentation to the Office of Small Business for the Small Business Commission’s review. The Planning Department recommended resolutions for each applicant and recorded relevant background information in the meeting packet.
