Placer County agencies update public-safety equipment policies under AB 41; Board approves additions including Lenco Bearcat

The statute aims to increase transparency, oversight and public input on military-style equipment used by policing agencies.
Sheriff's office: Captain Josh Channel presented the Sheriff's annual AB 41 report and requested the board approve adding a 2024 Lenco Bearcat G3 armored vehicle to the county's approved equipment list. The board voted to authorize the county to add the vehicle and to accept the Sheriff's AB 41 annual report.
Probation and District Attorney reports: Probation presented its AB 41 policy for the agency's unmanned aerial system (UAS or drone) and noted limited use for outreach and that the agency has not used the UAS for field operations during the reporting year. The District Attorney's office presented a brief update and its own AB 41 policy revisions.
Board action: For each agency the board introduced and waived oral reading of the uncodified ordinances and accepted the required AB 41 annual reports. The board approved each office's updated equipment use policy and the Sheriff's equipment addition by voice votes.
