Committee approves CAO report on integrating climate into budgeting; members ask equity and inventory linkages

The Budget and Finance Committee voted Feb. 18 to concur with the Energy and Environment Committee's Feb. 4 action and approved a City Administrative Officer report outlining a strategy to integrate climate considerations into the city budgeting process.
Committee members asked CAO staff about how climate justice and equity are being incorporated. Don Tran of the CAO explained the report focuses on government operations emissions and that broader climate justice considerations are addressed in the citywide inventory. Taylor Howie-Sauten (CAO) said the CAO is working with the city's equity team and climate staff and that the mayor's office is expected to release the budget on April 20; the CAO offered to report back to the committee on equity considerations.
The motion to concur passed on a 5-0 roll call. Committee members requested the CAO provide additional clarity in the follow-up report on how the equity index and other established city indicators will be used to evaluate climate spending decisions.
