Board approves tax budget, accepts county tax rates and several consent items; OSBA legal-assistance resolution passes over dissent

The Olentangy Local School District Board of Education approved multiple consent items and separate actions at its Feb. 6 meeting, including the district tax budget, county tax rates and amounts for calendar-year 2024 (pay 2025), routine human-resources items and business-management contracts. The board also passed a resolution allowing the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) Legal Assistance Fund to file an amicus brief on the district's behalf in pending litigation.
Treasurer Jenkins presented the tax-budget material and explained Ohio Revised Code normally requires a political subdivision to submit a budget, though the county budget commission may waive parts of that requirement. The board approved the tax budget and acceptance of the Delaware County auditor's rates and amounts as part of a consent motion. Roll-call votes on the treasurer consent items were recorded as: Mister Lester — yes; Doctor Dabrico — yes; Doctor Wallach — yes; Mister O'Brien — yes; Miss Schreiber — yes.
Superintendent consent items covering personnel (administrative, certified and classified staff, substitutes, supplementals), early graduations and business-and-management bids (paving and flooring contracts) were approved by a separate consent motion. Roll-call votes were recorded as: Doctor Dabrico — yes; Doctor Wallach — yes; Mister O'Brien — yes; Miss Schreiber — yes; Mister Lester — yes.
On a standalone item, the board voted to accept pro bono assistance from the OSBA Legal Assistance Fund to file an amicus brief in federal litigation involving the district. The board noted OSBA's involvement would be at no cost to the district. During discussion, one member said the amicus brief process is of limited value and opposed the resolution on principle. The roll-call vote for the OSBA legal-assistance resolution was: Doctor Dabrico — yes; Doctor Wallach — abstain; Mister O'Brien — no; Miss Schreiber — yes; Mister Lester — yes. The resolution passed.
