The UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, warned that parts of Sudan — including North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile states — are on the brink of catastrophe as violence escalates, the UN spokesperson reported.
The spokesperson said that, as of the previous day, the civilian death toll from recent shelling in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, had increased to 80, with about three dozen others injured. The coordinator condemned reports of the use of women and children as human shields in Kadugli, obstruction of humanitarian aid, and the detention of civilians, including children.
The spokesperson recalled that the Western Nuba Mountains are among areas where famine has been identified by the Famine Review Committee of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). The spokesperson also said humanitarian needs remain critical in Blue Nile state amid reports of mass mobilization for conflict, and that the coordinator called on all sides to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and allow safe and unrestricted humanitarian access.
No new UN operational commitments or military deployments were announced during the briefing; the spokesperson relayed the coordinator’s appeal for unimpeded humanitarian access and protection of civilians.
