District provides construction progress report: new junior highs, high school renovations and playground improvements

Fayetteville Public Schools facilities staff updated the school board on the status of several construction and renovation projects across the district, outlining approvals, design milestones and expected bidding windows.
Steve Flickinger reported that Modis Architects completed design documents for the new Wineland Junior High and submitted them to contractor Nabholz on Dec. 13 for budget pricing; staff expect a rough order-of-magnitude cost estimate in January and said city and state approval processes are underway. The Ramey (Ramey/Ramey Junior High) project is in schematic design with architects Crafton, Tull & LakeFlato; the board was shown early schematic work and staff described the proposed building as sited on a hillside.
For the John L. Colbert addition, the city planning commission approved a building expansion on Dec. 9, and district staff are working with Baldwin Shell (construction manager) and Lewis architects on a track revision to move from a 200‑meter to a 300‑meter track. Baldwin Shell said bid documents will be prepared to present a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) at the March board meeting, with site work planned to begin when school lets out.
Flickinger said the Fayetteville High School parking deck design documents were scheduled for completion on Jan. 7 and are moving through city review, with planning commission consideration expected in February. The Duncan parking lot east of the SWAC is completed and awaiting a city certificate of occupancy and will be open when students return.
Other projects reported: a bathroom renovation at Ramey Junior High began during Thanksgiving break (sanitary lines) and construction work was planned for the Christmas break with projected completion in January; ALPS Building C is being converted from a former automotive shop into two classrooms and is awaiting final city comments; Fayetteville High female restroom renovations are scheduled and the hydronic heating system phases are nearing completion; McNair Outdoor Classroom drainage has been addressed and artificial turf installation is scheduled for January with Bermuda sod to follow; Leverett Playground is in schematic design with ecological design group focusing on drainage, ADA access and phased construction planning.
Board members asked about timing for bids and site logistics; Baldwin Shell indicated bid documents for John L. Colbert would be ready for review and the GMP presentation at the March board meeting, with mobilization to begin when school is out. Staff said the Duncan Street connection drive will ease dismissal traffic and provide an additional exit for events such as home football games.
