Athletic update: multiple teams qualified for postseason and participation steady, district says

The board received a season-by-season athletics update that highlighted postseason qualifiers and participation counts across fall and winter sports.

Superintendent Adam opened the meeting with celebrations, including recognition that Williamston High School earned a 2024 College Success Award from GreatSchools and placement on the College Board AP Honor Roll, accomplishments Adam said reflect a “college-bound culture” at the high school.

An athletics presenter summarized fall highlights: girls cross country (11 participants) finished second in conference and qualified as a team for state; boys cross country (9 participants) finished first in conference and had one state qualifier; girls golf (12) finished second in conference and placed third at state; boys tennis (24) finished second in conference and qualified for team state; boys soccer (49) finished third in conference, won district and region matches, and advanced to the regional semifinals; football had 60 participants and qualified for the state playoffs despite a 3–6 record; swim and dive (14 girls) finished first in conference with team state qualifiers; esports fielded 13 students with multiple playoff teams; satellite cheer (11), equestrian (division C state champions), and other co-op sports were also noted.

The presenter said winter participation was steady: boys basketball (37), girls basketball (20), wrestling (28, including two girls), boys swim and dive (12), and cooperative hockey and gymnastics teams with small participant counts. He said coaches are making efforts to keep participation levels consistent and to allow multi-sport participation where feasible.

Board members asked about separating private and public schools in postseason competition; the presenter said the topic has been discussed with MHSA and further conversations are planned in early 2025.
