Board hears literacy, math curriculum and benchmark testing timeline

A curriculum staff member reported the board had previously approved moving forward with a K–5 literacy program that aligns with the science of reading and evidence-based practices; the district added vendor-supported training to help teachers implement the new materials with fidelity. The staff member said implementation support sessions are scheduled for early spring.
High-school math course materials are under review; staff said they narrowed a field of resources and will conduct sample-lesson reviews and site visits before bringing a recommendation to the board, with the goal of presenting decisions in spring so adopted materials can take effect next school year.
The district’s NWEA benchmark window was opened before the holiday break so teachers and curriculum teams could receive data earlier and plan instruction. The presenter said the testing window is within standardized norms and will remain open into mid-January.
Board members asked about timing and implementation fidelity; staff emphasized the need for training and coaching and said additional vendor-led supports were planned to ensure the new literacy program is implemented consistently.
No formal board action was requested at the Dec. 9 meeting.
