Berkeley County board approves architects, school plans and forms naming committees

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — The Berkeley County Board of Education on Tuesday approved contracts for architectural and roof-design work, accepted several committee recommendations on school plans and budgets, approved out-of-state travel and appointed committees to recommend names for two new schools.
The board voted during its Jan. 21 meeting to award RFQ 7132425 for architecture and engineering services for building additions and renovations to Moseley Architects of South Carolina for Berkeley High School and to F. W. Architects Incorporated for Goose Creek High School. The board also approved RFQ 7152425 for roof design services at Sangaree Elementary School to WM Building Envelope Consultants, LLC.
The actions came amid a series of committee reports that received voice votes. The Committee on Academics and Innovation recommended approval of the Head Start budget expenditure report and Head Start credit report for November 2024, a slate of prospective new hires and a refunding application. The committee also recommended approval of identified schools— continuous improvement and turnaround plans to be submitted to the Office of School Transformation by the Jan. 30, 2025 deadline.
Committee on Finance and Human Resources recommended and the board approved out-of-state travel as presented by administration. Several committee recommendations were presented as motions "on recommendation of the committee," with board members voting by voice; the meeting record indicates the ayes prevailed on those motions.
Superintendent Dr. Dixon provided the superintendent—s report and said the district was monitoring weather conditions: "We are, closely monitoring, as you can tell, the weather," and that administration would convene the following morning to determine next steps and communications for families.
Board Chair provided administrative reminders, including that annual ethics reporting is open with a March 31, 2025 deadline. The chair also reported formation of two four-member special committees to recommend names for two new schools. The Nexton school naming committee includes Angelina Davenport, Cindy Coats, Kathy Littleton and Joe Baker; the Jedburgh school naming committee includes Michael Ramsey, Yvonne Bradley, Joe Baker and Cindy Coats. The chair noted the district policy requires a naming committee to take input and return three to five recommendations to the full board for a vote.
The meeting opened with routine approval of the agenda and minutes from the Jan. 6, 2025 meeting and concluded with a motion to adjourn.
