Board approves annual school safety plans, requires three lockdown drills including one with law enforcement

The Nash County Board of Education on Dec. 5 approved the district’s annual school safety plans, which the presenter said must be submitted for board approval each year and have been posted to the state-mandated portal for several years.
Dr. Farrell (presenter) explained the district’s safety plan process and the drills and documentation required. "Our school safety plans are plans that must be submitted for approval to the Board of Education each school year," the presenter said. He told the board that Nash County Public Schools requires three lockdown drills per year, and that one of those lockdown drills must be conducted with law enforcement and occur during the first or second scheduled lockdown drill. Principals must also test the red emergency buttons during those drills and submit reports documenting the exercise.
In addition, schools must conduct two tabletop exercises per year (documenting scenarios and attendees) and monthly fire drills; the fire drill is required within the first 10 days of school. The presenter said law enforcement, fire and emergency management agencies can access the plan through the portal if needed for an incident.
Board member Dr. Donovan Chavis made the motion to accept the safety plans; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The approval was recorded as a formal board action.
