Lenoir County school board elects Walter Anderson chair, Outlaw Starkey vice chair

At its Dec. 9 meeting the Lenoir County Board of Education completed annual officer elections. Walter Anderson won the chair vote 4-3; Outlaw Starkey was selected vice chair by the same margin.
Walter Anderson was elected chair of the Lenoir County Board of Education on Dec. 9 after a contested vote, and Outlaw Starkey was elected vice chair, the board announced during its annual organization meeting.
Board members completed the election after attorney Jason Weber explained the ballot process. Superintendent Dr. Williams presided as members nominated candidates and distributed ballots for a written vote when there was more than one nominee.
The chair election began after nominations: Walter Anderson was nominated by the superintendent; Michelle Cash was nominated by another board member. Ballots were distributed and collected; Anderson received four votes to Cash’s three and was declared chair. The newly elected chair then presided over the vice-chair election. After nominations and ballots, Outlaw Starkey received four votes to Bruce Hill’s three and was declared vice chair.
The elections followed the board’s policy for officer selection requiring a majority of members present. Board attorney Jason Weber outlined that if more than one person is nominated, members complete written ballots and the vote is repeated until a majority is achieved.
The newly elected officers will assume the duties described in board policy; the board moved on to its regular agenda after the organization process concluded.
