Garfield teacher credited with saving a student's life with Heimlich maneuver honored at board meeting

The Garfield Board of Education on Dec. 16 publicly recognized a teacher who intervened when a student began choking. The board credited Christine Morrow, a teacher at the district, with performing the Heimlich maneuver and dislodging a piece of candy, then following district protocol by sending the student to the nurse and notifying parents and administrators.
"This situation could have been a lot worse," a middle-school official told the board while introducing the recognition. "If it wasn't for the quick decision and reaction by Christine Morrow, our teacher, let's give her a round of applause." The official said the student was sent to the nurse, checked out, and returned to class that day; the student was back at school the next day.
The board presented Morrow with a certificate of recognition and several trustees thanked her for acting quickly. Trustees also noted that Morrow had been named teacher of the year earlier in the district, and members praised district training and preparedness for medical emergencies.
Ending: Trustees said they were grateful for staff training and oversight and thanked Morrow for a "lifesaving" action that, the district said, followed established School Health/incident protocols.
