Coffee County schools, board honored for statewide academic and governance awards

At the Coffee County Board of Education meeting on Dec. 19, 2024, district officials recognized three schools for state-level math and literacy achievements and noted that the board itself recently received the Georgia School Public Affairs (GSPA) Exemplary School Board recognition.
The recognitions highlighted Wiregrass Regional College and Career Academy, Westside Elementary and West Green Elementary for progress on Georgia Department of Education measures. Benito Law, a district staff member, told the board the GSPA award “shows achievement that they have a commitment to improvement, to transparency, [and] collaboration,” and she credited board members for supporting instructional work across the district.
Wiregrass Regional College and Career Academy received a high school math achievement award for meeting the district’s stated benchmark of 90 percent or more of high school students scoring proficient or above on the Georgia Milestones. Pam Smith, principal at Wiregrass, was invited to the meeting; district staff said school leaders are already planning next steps to maintain and expand student performance. Westside Elementary received a fifth-grade math gateway growth award for improving the percentage of fifth graders scoring proficient or above in math. West Green received a third-grade literacy gateway growth award for increasing the share of third graders reading at or above grade level.
District staff said State Superintendent Richard Woods visited the district earlier in the day and commended the schools and educators. Benito Law said the superintendent asked attendees to view the new academic recognitions as comparable to “state championships in academics.”
Board members and district staff praised the teachers and administrators involved and encouraged continued focus on numeracy and literacy strategies. The recognitions were presented during the meeting’s awards portion; no formal board action was required for the presentations.
