Columbus City Council voted unanimously to appoint Otto Beatty to fill the District 7 council seat left vacant by the resignation of Councilmember Shayla Favre.
After an executive session to consider applications under the Columbus City Charter and Ohio Revised Code, a council member nominated Otto Beatty. The clerk called the roll and members recorded their votes in favor; President Harden congratulated Beatty following the vote.
Council President Harden told the meeting that more than 30 district residents applied for the vacancy, that the field was narrowed to 10 finalists and that council had interviewed all finalists and held a public hearing. Harden said council was seeking a member "who would be ready to address the biggest issues facing our city on day 1," and said housing was a principal concern cited in deliberations.
In remarks after the appointment, Harden noted Beatty's background in real estate, business and law and his service on multiple city, state and nonprofit boards and commissions. Council then recessed for five minutes and resumed regular business.
