Wyoming council certifies election results, swears in three members and elects Postma mayor pro tem

The Wyoming City Council on Dec. 2 accepted the board of canvassers’ certificate that certified three successful candidates and administered oaths of office for the newly elected and returning council members.

The council voted to accept the canvassers’ report and then swore in Marissa Posler as Ward 2 council member, Rob Postma as Ward 3 council member and Sheldon de Kroger as council member at large. After the swearing-in, the council held a paper-ballot election for mayor pro tem and certified Rob Postma as mayor pro tem.

The certificate of elections was presented as part of the city clerk’s reports and council members moved to approve the canvassers’ findings before the oath. The mayor read a proclamation of appreciation for outgoing council member Tommy Brand later in the meeting.

Council members cast paper ballots as required by the city charter for the mayor pro tem selection; the clerk read the ballots aloud and the council then made a motion to certify the vote. The roll call for the mayor pro tem certification recorded unanimous support for Postma.

The new and returning members will take their seats as the council begins the next two-year cycle. The council also announced a timetable for filling the 1st ward vacancy created when Sheldon de Kroger moved to the at-large seat; applications are due to the city clerk’s office by 4 p.m. Dec. 19, and applicants must be registered voters who have lived in the city at least one year and reside in the 1st ward.

Less critical procedural items at the meeting included approval of minutes from the Nov. 18 regular meeting and routine roll-call votes to adopt the evening’s agenda and other consent items.
