Kevin Van Winkle sworn in as Douglas County commissioner

Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle was sworn in during a ceremony in Douglas County, where a judge administered the oath and Van Winkle pledged to uphold the U.S. and Colorado constitutions.

Judge Vaughn administered the oath and praised Van Winklefor his public service, saying, "the value of a man is in what he gives and not what he's capable of receiving." After placing his hand on a Bible, Van Winkle recited the oath: "I, Kevin Van Winkle, do solemnly swear" to uphold the constitutions of the United States and the State of Colorado and to "fulfill my duties as county commissioner to the best of my ability." The judge concluded the ceremony by presenting Van Winkle as the new county commissioner for Douglas County.

In brief remarks after the oath, Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle said the day was "a big day for the Van Winkle family and team Van Winkle" and said he hoped it would also be "a big day for Douglas County" as the county begins "a new era of peace and prosperity" and as he seeks to "bring civility and honor and respect back to these hallowed chambers." Van Winkle said he grew up in Douglas County and cited his two children, Jack and Hailey, as a reason he ran, saying he wants them to "grow up in the county that I grew up in" and to experience "safe schools, safe streets" and opportunity.

Fellow elected officials and attendees offered congratulations. Several speakers on the dais praised Van Winkle's service and welcomed his family; one speaker noted the sacrifice that public service entails for families and thanked Van Winkle's spouse and children for that support.

The ceremony was largely ceremonial: the oath was administered, the new commissioner addressed those present and exchanged remarks with other officials. Van Winkle closed by thanking attendees and invoking a blessing on Douglas County.
