The Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 17 approved a resolution appointing Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle to the Douglas County Board of Health to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Laura Thomas. The chair introduced the item, noting the Board of Health has a quarterly meeting coming up and that the appointment would ensure county representation.
Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle said he appreciated the appointment and the work performed by staff and prior commissioners in creating the county's Board of Health. "I look forward to serving on the board," Van Winkle said. Other commissioners praised the county's health department for maintaining continuity of services since separating from the prior Tri-County arrangement and cited the board's ongoing Healthy Families initiative.
The board opened and received no public comment on the appointment and approved the resolution by voice vote.
Why it matters: Douglas County's Board of Health carries responsibilities for local public-health programs and oversight; the appointment fills a vacancy and provides two county commissioners on the board, which county leaders said increases elected accountability.
Next steps: Van Winkle will assume the Board of Health seat immediately and attend the scheduled quarter meeting, per comments at the meeting.
