Hudsonville Public School District staff reported to the school board that bids have been received for a new storage facility serving the South Elementary campus and that OAK will serve as the district’s construction manager. The district plans to present contract awards to the board at its February meeting, with site work potentially beginning in May.
The facility is intended to provide on‑campus storage for equipment now kept at the South Elementary garage and to reduce labor involved in transporting large items, including snow‑removal equipment. District staff said the project does not need to be finished before the start of the school year but will require coordination around bus operations and physical access to the site.
District staff said there were 35 bidders across five bid categories. In the site work category, Site Works Solutions was named as a bidder that included required line items, while two of the lowest bidders were deemed to have “missed the road” in their submissions and were not selected for that category. Staff said OAK’s fees and other project management costs are included in the top‑line bond figure for the district (reported in the meeting as $114,000,000). Staff described OAK as working for the district under a construction management arrangement that helps the district write and manage construction contracts.
Staff told the board that the project will require improving what is now a gravel access road—described in the meeting as a “curb cut” and access via the bus loop—and that the district intends to upgrade that road surface to asphalt. They said some site work, such as grading and utility work, could occur before any foundation work is poured. The district also noted that construction timing will need to avoid interfering with physical education classes and bus circulation.
No formal contract awards were made during the meeting. Staff said the recommended contracts will be presented to the board at its February meeting for approval before work proceeds.
District staff quoted in the meeting: “We have 35 bidders for 5 categories,” and “OAK is our construction manager. And that’s as close to having an employee as possible.” Those remarks were made by the district facilities/operations staff member who presented the bid results.
If the board approves the recommended contracts in February, staff said they will finalize the construction timeline and begin preconstruction site work. The board did not take action on contracts during the session.
