Metuchen Board approves personnel, finance, policy and curriculum items; discusses jazz band trip costs

The Metuchen Board of Education approved grouped personnel, finance, policy and curriculum items during its Jan. 28 meeting and discussed cost and logistics for a proposed Metuchen High School jazz-band trip.

The board voted to approve the minutes from Jan. 7 (special business meeting 1, special business meeting 2, and the Jan. 7 board meeting) and then approved grouped personnel items A1–A20, finance items B1–B7, policy items 1–5, and curriculum items D1–D9. Each group was moved and seconded on the record and approved by roll call.

Personnel and minutes A motion to approve the Jan. 7 minutes and the personnel slate A1–A20 passed by roll call. The agenda motion text presented was to adopt the superintendent’s recommendations for personnel as listed (A1–A20). Curriculum and a student trip Mister Derflinger moved to approve curriculum items D1–D9, seconded by Mister Lifton. Among the curriculum items was approval related to a Metuchen High School jazz-band trip. Mister Suss asked about transportation and costs for both a bus and an equipment truck; he expressed concern that the total cost could exceed $1,000 once truck rental and driver were included.

Mister Harvier (district staff) said the district would do “a little more due diligence” to confirm whether the truck is required but said that, as of the meeting, conversations indicated the truck was needed for safety because band equipment cannot safely be carried inside the passenger bus. Board members agreed to approve the bus reservation to lock in the transportation and to continue looking for the best, safety-conscious cost for the truck. The motion to approve the curriculum items passed by roll call; the chair announced, “Motion carries.”
