Metuchen Board honors district educators and student performers

The Metuchen Board of Education recognized a slate of school-level winners in the Governor's Educator of the Year program and heard a brief student musical preview during its meeting on Jan. 28.
The board honored teachers and education-service professionals representing multiple schools in the Metuchen Public School District. Dr. Caputo introduced the recognitions and said the awards showcase “some of our best educators” after describing the district’s participation in the state program.
Moore School’s Governor’s Educator of the Year is Jennifer Karpon. Karpon told the board she is “very honored to be able to teach in the same esteemed district that I grew up as a student in.” Moore School’s education-services professional of the year is Pam Malone; Malone said she felt “honored to receive this award” and praised the school community.
Campbell School’s Governor’s Educator of the Year is Jennifer Pasquale. Pasquale thanked the board, administration and colleagues and said the award reflects the community’s support for teacher growth. Campbell’s education-services professional of the year is Amy Bindra; she said she values the district’s wraparound approach and staff collaboration.
Edgar School’s Governor’s Educator of the Year is Caroline Ford; Edgar’s education-services professional of the year is Mary Jo Pullman. Ford reflected on the value of giving students “the freedom to take risks” and thanked administrators and colleagues for their support. Pullman, a longtime paraeducator, said the work with students has been “one of the best experiences” of her life.
From Metuchen High School, the Governor’s Educator of the Year is Anne Leghorn; the high school’s Ed Services Professional of the Year, Christina Theiss, was recognized but not present. Leghorn described collaborative work across grades and programs and thanked colleagues for supporting instructional innovation.
Earlier in the meeting the board also heard a short preview performance by students from the Edgar School Music Drama Club of a number from Finding Nemo Jr.; Dr. Caputo invited the community to attend the musical at Metuchen High School the following weekend.
The board and superintendent offered public appreciation for the honorees. After the presentations, the meeting moved on to committee reports and routine agenda business.
