Eaton County undersheriff reviews November arrests, crashes and a retail fraud operation

Undersheriff Jeff Cook, speaking for Eaton County Sheriff Freich, summarized law-enforcement highlights from November during the county public safety committee on Dec. 5, 2024. Cook said deputies handled a fatal single-vehicle crash, multiple impaired-driving investigations, an attempted home invasion, and a retail-fraud enforcement operation that led to numerous arrests.

Cook told commissioners the Nov. 3 crash on I-69 at Vermontville Highway involved an elderly driver who veered off the road and rolled the vehicle; an off-duty officer on scene suspected a medical issue may have been involved. Deputies also investigated several impaired-driving incidents, including a reported hit-and-run tied to an apparent third-offense operating-while-intoxicated arrest and another investigation where deputies sought to determine whether a driver was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The sheriff's office responded to a reported attempted home invasion in the 27,100 block of Arch Road, Cook said. A homeowner's security camera showed a man tugging on a door; deputies located and arrested a suspect who was already on bond for resisting and obstructing. Cook said the suspect was charged with malicious destruction of property and bond violations.

Cook also reported a Nov. 11 domestic-violence investigation in the 57,100 block of East Saginaw Highway. The victim reported being strangled and later threatened; deputies arrested the named suspect on charges including strangulation, extortion and related counts, Cook said.

Cook described a Nov. 26, county-coordinated retail-fraud enforcement operation planned by Detective Lieutenant Aaron Cantwell and conducted with loss-prevention staff at several retail stores. Cook said the operation produced 14 arrests, including two juveniles; cleared 16 warrants; and resulted in recovery of methamphetamine, heroin and at least one firearm. He listed several individual arrest circumstances, including people taken into custody on outstanding bench warrants and one stop that produced a loaded Glock under a vehicle seat.

Cook praised deputies for the operation and for other arrests during the month. He closed by asking if commissioners had questions about the incidents he reported.
