Dozens of Moreno Valley residents spoke during public comment on Dec. 17 asking the council to expand access to a recently opened international-standard badminton court and to support an Inland Empire badminton tournament.
Speakers representing the Moreno Valley Sports Club described rising demand and argued that more court time and a weekend tournament would draw players from surrounding cities. "Our main goal is to bring health awareness, sports activity, physical activity ... to all the ages in the community," said Al Musick, who identified himself as part of the Moreno Valley Sports Club.
Young players and parents said badminton brings high school students and multiethnic communities together. "It's a really good opportunity to bring also young people and high school students together," said Jason Goh, who identified himself as a player and student.
Councilmembers and staff acknowledged the demand. During closing comments Councilmember Gonzales moved to direct staff to work with the Moreno Valley Sports Club to explore adding a second weekly court night and supporting a city-hosted badminton tournament; the motion was seconded and the council instructed staff to follow up.
Parks and Community Services staff previously helped secure a single weekly slot and worked with the club to install an international-standard court at the city's recreation center. Club leaders said the current Friday slot fills quickly and that an additional weeknight or weekend slot would broaden access for families and commuters.
Councilmembers said staff should study scheduling, staffing and any costs to expand hours or host a tournament, and report back with recommendations.
