Committee directs staff to rescope Zontakahini playground project with $500,000 city contribution

The committee heard that $75,000 had previously been appropriated for design based on a rough $750,000 estimate; staff and the Juneau School District told the committee the current proposed design and scope had a substantially higher cost (staff referenced figures up to $1.8 million). The district requested consideration of using Juneau School District deferred maintenance funds for up to one-third of the projected cost. Committee members expressed concern about relying on large city contributions given competing deferred maintenance needs and uncertain state education funding.
Assembly member Smith moved that the committee ask for a rescope and propose a CBJ base contribution of $500,000; the committee accepted the direction by unanimous consent and asked staff to pursue additional fundraising and community support as appropriate.
