UN envoy Pedersen engages Syrian actors as UN pursues Syrian-led political process

The United Nations said its Syria envoy, Geir Pedersen, has continued intensive engagement with Syrian authorities, opposition groups and civil-society actors as part of efforts to advance a Syrian-led political process.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Pedersen met the Syrian caretaker foreign minister, Assad Al Shaibani, and held discussions with a “broad spectrum” of Syrians including the Syrian National Council, civil society representatives and regional stakeholders. Dujarric said Pedersen’s engagements are aimed at transitioning from the caretaker phase to an inclusive, credible political process “recognized by both the Syrian people and the international community.”
Dujarric said Pedersen will brief the Security Council from Damascus in a closed meeting and that UN teams are conducting weekly assessment missions in communities affected by hostilities, including northern rural Hama and Jandaras in northern Aleppo. He emphasized that ongoing hostilities — including shelling affecting Al Hasakah, Raqqa and eastern Aleppo governorates, and incidents near the Tishrin Dam — continue to undermine civilian safety and complicate humanitarian access.
