Miss Washington told the board she had three copies of Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng and summarized the book as a dystopian two-voice narrative (mother and son) that explores themes of coming of age, identity, the power of storytelling, and empathy. She described the book as providing a contemporary Asian voice and said it would align with freshman-year themes. "This novel examines some of the key themes of the freshman year, coming of age, identity, the power of storytelling, and the developing of empathy and respect for others," Miss Washington said.
Directors were invited to review the copies; the board indicated members would have time to consider the request and take it up at a future meeting. The teacher said she would leave copies for directors to review.
No action was taken at the Jan. 27 meeting; the presentation was informational and the board will consider the request at a later date as part of the pilot/approval process for curriculum materials.
