Venice planning commission recommends approval of 2024 comprehensive plan annual data update (petition 24-52)

The City of Venice Planning Commission on Jan. 21, 2025 voted to recommend that city council approve the 2024 comprehensive plan annual data update, petition 24-52, after finding the amendment consistent with the comprehensive plan and with Florida Statute Chapter 163, Part II.
The recommendation came following staff remarks that the update involved minimal substantive change. Amy, a staff member, told the commission that “there’s very little changes,” describing the item primarily as an annual set of numeric updates. The commission opened a certified public hearing for the petition; proof of advertisement on Jan. 4, 2025 under the City of Venice Land Development Code is on file in the planning and zoning office.
Commissioner Jasper moved the commission recommendation, saying, “Based on review of the application materials, the staff report, and testimony provided during the public hearing, the planning commission, sitting as the local planning agency, finds this petition consistent with the comprehensive plan and in compliance with the Florida statute chapter 163, part 2, and therefore recommends to city council approval of comprehensive plan amendment petition number 24-52.” The motion was seconded by Bill and passed with no opposition recorded during the meeting.
There were no members of the public signed up to speak on the petition. A commissioner thanked Kelsey Shope for leading the annual update work over the year.
Commissioners noted several upcoming items for future meetings, including a comprehensive plan amendment for property north on Knights Trail (referred to at the meeting as the "cows and turkeys" property), a pending site-plan, conditional-use and design-alternative application for a property on Curry Lane, and a recent council approval of the Laurel Jack Randy Shopping Center. Staff noted that Mr. Snyder will present the planning commission’s annual report to city council on Feb. 25, 2025.
The planning commission’s action is a recommendation; the city council will take final action on petition 24-52 at a future meeting. The record for this hearing shows the item was advertised as required and that no public comments were received during the commission’s hearing.
