Akron council approves conditional use for tire sales and repair shop on Massillon Road

Akron City Council on Jan. 27, 2025, unanimously approved an ordinance authorizing a conditional use to establish a tire sales and repair shop at 1475 Massillon Road.
Planning staff member Antonucci presented the application from petitioner James Ahlstrom, describing the property as containing two buildings: a roughly 2,000-square-foot brick main building for sales and repair work and an 875-square-foot metal accessory building for storage. The front of the property is paved with curb cuts providing access from Massillon Road.
The petitioner told staff the planned hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and that three to five new employees would be hired for the business. Staff and the planning commission recommended approval subject to conditions. Council suspended the rules and passed the ordinance 12-0.
Planning staff noted the property is a former gas station constructed in 1953 and that the proposed reuse is consistent with surrounding businesses. The planning department indicated the lot and building sizes are sufficient for interior auto repair work and proper tire storage.
