Venus ISD campuses report student recognitions, programs and test retake results

Board members received campus reports and recognitions during the Jan. 13 meeting of the Venus ISD Board of Trustees.
Superintendent Patrick Torres read a proclamation recognizing School Board Appreciation Month and thanked board members for their service. Campus leaders then presented monthly recognitions: multiple teachers, staff and students were named teacher/staff/student of the month on their respective campuses (examples noted on the record included Jeri Cox, teacher of the month; student of the month Nico Hernandez; and support staff member Grubbs).
School reports included extracurricular activity updates: band and choir winter concerts, all-region band participation, a hosted mock TSA regional event, an upcoming UIL event the district will host, esports tournaments (including state-level participation), and competitive girls soccer returning from a Bay City tournament with a trophy.
District assessment retest results were discussed for December: 56% of retesters in Algebra passed, 89% in Biology passed, 73% in History passed and 30% in English passed. Presenters said the English scores indicate a need to emphasize writing instruction.
Other campus details: the elementary campus reported enrollment of about 677 students; the MentorCare mentoring program has 36 students participating and seven students waiting to be assigned mentors; the district reported a Texas Rising Star certification at the daycare (Tammy Nelson) allowing subsidized daycare for employees and for teen parents on campus.
Principals and campus leaders presented the recognitions and thanked staff and volunteers; a video from Venus Elementary was played for the board.
