Committee makes routine approvals, forwards animal shelter hire to full board

The Jackson County Public Safety and Transportation Committee completed several routine actions Jan. 13, voting unanimously on agenda, minutes, reports and payment of claims, and forwarding a staffing request from the county animal shelter to the full board with a recommendation of approval.
The committee approved its meeting agenda and the minutes from the previous month without discussion.
Brett Gates of the Region 2 Planning Commission delivered the commission's semiannual update on planning and transportation activities from July 1 through Dec. 31, including work on I-94 freeway modernization planning, Jackson MPO activities and multiple TIP amendments. The committee voted to receive the report.
The committee also received a report from the Jackson County Department of Transportation (no representative present for a presentation).
The animal shelter requested one new full-time kennel attendant, citing that intakes have more than doubled in four years and that reliance on casual staff has produced high turnover. The shelter representative said the position would be funded from the shelter's millage and generated revenue, and that no general fund dollars would be used. Commissioner Williams moved to forward the request to the full board with a recommendation of approval; Commissioner Duckham supported the motion and it passed unanimously.
The committee voted to pay the claims as presented and approved the reporting schedule for February, which will include the Jackson County Department of Transportation monthly report, sheriff semiannual report, prosecutor semiannual report, public defender quarterly report and 911 quarterly report.
There were no public comments and no committee member remarks before the meeting adjourned.
