Nash County schools recognize more than 120 teachers and principals for exceeding expected growth

The Nash County Board of Education used its January meeting to recognize teachers and principals whose students exceeded expected academic growth for the 2023–24 school year under North Carolina’s Education Value-Added Assessment System, or EVAAS.
District presenters named more than 120 teachers and principals from elementary, middle and high schools across the district for meeting or exceeding growth predictions in the EVAAS model. Monique Cargrove Jones, executive director of elementary education, and Jeff White, executive director of secondary education, led the recognitions, calling forward individual teachers and principals to receive certificates and a group photograph.
Superintendent Steve Ellis thanked staff and said seeing the number of honorees was the realization of a goal to expand the event’s venue. “We have over about a 120 that [were] recognized tonight,” Ellis said, thanking the honorees and the community for attending.
The board listed honorees by school during the meeting; presenters said honorees and the principals who led them demonstrated greater academic progress than the EVAAS model predicted for their students. The recognitions included named teachers from Bailey Elementary, Benvenue Elementary, Cooper’s Elementary, Inglewood Elementary and many other schools, and principals from multiple schools and academies. The board also highlighted principals and teachers who exceeded growth targets.

EVAAS is a statistical tool used by North Carolina to analyze student growth and attribute contributions to educators and schools. The district presented the recognitions as an acknowledgement of teacher and principal impact on students’ academic progress during the 2023–24 school year.
