Sandpoint resident urges council to reopen debate on RV park and Bridge Street hotel parking

Clay Hutchins, a Sandpoint resident, used the Jan. 8 public-comment period to ask the City Council to reconsider how a recent land swap and subsequent approvals are being implemented, saying he fears the city is maintaining property as an RV park rather than following the original public presentations that emphasized boat parking and other uses.
Hutchins told the council he recalled robust public debate at the time the land swap was approved and said he had no issue with staff time being used to apply for grants, but urged the council to “have some public debate on that, not just slide these things by after the fact.” He said he viewed the current RV-park outcome as a “bait and switch.”
Hutchins also raised concerns about parking reductions at the Bridge Street hotel project. He recounted that project presentations to the city’s zoning body had shown near full compliance with parking rules and that a consultant’s report now indicates peak demand would need fewer spaces than hotel rooms — “176 hotel rooms, and they’re saying at peak demand, they only need 145 spots,” he said — and warned that reduced onsite parking could push more cars to the city beach and other areas.
No council action was taken on Hutchins’ comments during the meeting. Councilors and staff did not debate the underlying zoning approvals during the public-comment portion; Hutchins’ remarks were recorded as part of the meeting’s public-comment record.
