Board hears update on redistricting timeline; administration recommends extending deadline

District administrators told the board on Feb. 10 they recommend extending the timeline for demographic and redistricting work so staff can incorporate feedback from recent community meetings and reconcile differences between internal data and the North Dakota Insights dashboard.

Catherine (presenting from the administration) read a memorandum from Superintendent Dr. Brenner recommending that the district move the previously scheduled March 17 recommendation date to a later, to‑be‑determined date. The memo emphasized three areas of follow‑up: integrating in‑person feedback and social‑pinpoint survey input; revisiting and prioritizing guiding principles and boundary criteria; and validating functional capacity numbers (class sections, class sizes and programmatic offerings) so stakeholders understand the rationale for any proposed changes.

Board members asked detailed questions. Member Amber Hodak said she had heard from dozens of constituents and welcomed an extended timeline; she and others suggested holding a public forum or additional community meetings. Member Jay Cleven asked about whether the method used to predict academic performance for proposed boundary options was consistent with previous efforts; administration replied that the social‑economic indicator metrics are produced by a consultant and may include measures beyond free/reduced‑price lunch rates (household income, housing values) and that discrepancies between internal counts and the North Dakota Insights dashboard must be resolved.

Why it matters: Redistricting affects school assignments, program access, transportation and extracurricular participation. Board members and administrators said reconciling data and giving constituents more chances to provide input will strengthen final recommendations and reduce confusion when new boundary proposals are released.

Next steps: Administration said Mr. Schwartz will attend the Feb. 24 meeting to lead discussion and that the demographic task force will meet the following evening. Board members suggested hosting a public forum before the end of the school year to broaden input; administration said it would consider that possibility while being mindful of the schedule required to implement boundary changes for the 2026‑27 school year if that is the chosen start date.
