Planning and Zoning Board recommends approval of larger wall sign for Festival Supermarket at Presidential Plaza

The Planning and Zoning Board of the City of North Lauderdale voted to recommend approval of sign waiver WSAV-2501, allowing larger wall lettering for Festival Supermarket at 7208 Southgate Boulevard in Presidential Plaza.
Board members heard from Andrew Disbury, assistant community development director, who said the request is to permit 48-inch-high lettering for the word “Festival” and 36-inch-high lettering for the word “Supermarket” on the store’s north-facing elevation along Southgate Boulevard. Disbury said the proposed main wall sign totals 192 square feet; the zoning district’s maximum allowed sign area for the plaza is 208 square feet. Disbury told the board staff recommends approval with four conditions, and that the applicant has submitted permit paperwork that had been held pending the waiver decision.
Applicant Ricardo Coelho Junior, who identified himself for the record, confirmed the dimensions and that the store is already open for business. The board asked for clarification that decorative graphic elements shown on the plan were not included in the 192-square-foot total; Disbury confirmed only the lettering was counted in that square footage.
A motion to recommend approval of the sign waiver — specifying 48-inch lettering for “Festival” and 36-inch lettering for “Supermarket” on the north-facing elevation and subject to all applicable city sign code provisions and the four conditions recommended by staff — was made and seconded. Vice Chair Barbara Thomas seconded the motion. A roll-call vote recorded support from Board member Randy Galum, Board member Mann, Vice Chair Barbara Thomas and Chair McKay; the board’s recommendation will now go to the City Commission for final action, which staff said is scheduled for the commission’s second meeting in January (Jan. 28).
The board’s recommendation is an advisory action to the City Commission; final permit issuance will depend on Commission approval and completion of the city’s permitting steps.
Votes on this item were recorded during the public hearing portion of the meeting; no members of the public spoke against the waiver during the public-comment portion on the item.
