City staff on Jan. 7 gave an overview of Southlake’s internal employee safety program, describing regular facility audits, injury reviews and training aimed at keeping city employees safe as winter weather approaches.
Deputy Director of Human Resources Chad Minter and Purchasing Manager Tim Slifka, co‑chairs of the employee safety committee, told the council the committee was formed in 2016 to promote workplace safety across departments. Minter said the committee conducts monthly building walk‑throughs, reviews employee injuries and vehicle accidents, and issues monthly safety communications to staff.
Minter and Slifka reported the committee met 10 times in the past year, reviewed 37 employee injury reports and 21 vehicle accidents, and maintains a small budget used to buy immediate safety supplies such as first aid kits and traction spikes for winter weather. Slifka described the committee’s 12 guiding principles and said members perform building safety audits and recommend training and corrective actions to departments.
Why it matters: With winter weather expected later in the week, staff said the committee’s regular work and small supply budget help the city prepare to keep public‑facing and field employees safe during operations that continue through storms.
Next steps: Staff will continue seasonal planning and departmental coordination through the city’s emergency operations center and implement the committee’s recommended measures as weather conditions warrant.
