Bexar County Commissioners Court on Jan. 7 approved a budget adjustment to accept Year 2 funding from the Texas Indigent Defense Commission (TIDC) for the Public Defender's Office non‑citizen unit, with a total project cost of $468,856.33 including a $140,656.90 county match.
Commissioner Grant Moody said he has raised prior concerns about the grant and possible duplication of services and told the court, "for those reasons, I'm gonna, still not support this item." County staff replied that the unit is performing constitutionally mandated work and is required by the Supreme Court’s guidance; staff offered to meet with Moody to provide additional detail. The motion to accept the grant passed by voice vote.
The approved adjustment lists $328,199.43 from TIDC and $140,656.90 in county match for the term 10/01/2024 to 09/30/2025. Court records show the judge and commissioners approved the measure after the discussion; Moody registered opposition on the record.
County officials said the funds will support non‑citizen defense work managed by the Public Defender’s Office and that staff would meet with concerned commissioners to explain scope and avoid duplication with other services.
