Gilliam County discusses start-up funding for summer youth program, part-time prevention coordinator role

Staff estimated the coordinator position would cost about $45,000 to $50,000 annually and said roughly half of the position's cost could be paid with prevention-program dollars, creating a part-time funding option.
Officials noted there is no summer childcare option for children over age 5 in parts of the county and that local assets such as the Condon library have served as informal after-school hubs. Commissioners discussed coordinating existing community resources (libraries, arts council activities, school facilities) and using prevention dollars and other local funds to launch a summer program. The court directed staff to pursue the program design and funding in advance of summer and to continue outreach to partners for implementation.
No formal appropriation or hiring action was taken at the meeting.
